Winter storm watch issued for parts of metro Atlanta, N. Ga.

-----------------------

A winter storm watch has been issued with a chance for snow. It will go into effect late Monday night for parts of metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

Parts of north Georgia could even see a wintry mix turn to snow Tuesday. With temperatures plummeting behind the arctic front, any wet, untreated roads will have the potential to freeze, leading to ice into Wednesday morning.

Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Katie Walls said the following counties will be affected:

  • Bartow, Carroll, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fannin, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Heard, Lumpkin, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Union, Towns, White

Walls broke down the impacts and timing of the winter storm watch in a Facebook Live below:

On Twitter, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced brining is planned to begin for the affected areas tomorrow night.

Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said that accumulating snow is likely for the north Georgia mountains, with 1-3 inches possible. Areas of northwest metro Atlanta are going to have lighter amounts, from a dusting to less than 1 inch.

"Light snow near the metro could cause big problems on the roads late Tuesday and Wednesday morning," Deon said.

For Sunday and Monday, Georgia will enjoy temperatures in the mid-50s, but temperatures will drop throughout the day Tuesday.

Black ice will be possible even in areas that receive little to no snow accumulation as temperatures drop below freezing through the day Tuesday into Wednesday morning

Wind chills will drop into the low to mid teens across much of the area with single digits expected in the North Georgia mountains late Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Winds will rapidly increase behind the cold front during the day Tuesday and persist into Tuesday night. Expect northwest winds around 15-20 mph with gusts up to 25-30 mph.

The cold will linger throughout Wednesday and Thursday mornings with temperatures starting out in the teens.
