COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The sound of bagpipes playing Amazing Grace echoed through a Civil War battlefield in Cobb County Friday. They were called out by name: 2,977 names. And for each and every one, a large American flag.

“You hear the number of people who were lost. But when you see the flags, it really brings it home for you,” local resident Lauren Porter said.
Twenty-five years after 9/11, dozens gathered at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park to remember the innocent lives that were lost.
“May these flags always remind us that the freedom we enjoy was purchased at a tremendous price,” State Representative Devan Seabaugh said.

The Kiwanis Club of Marietta takes good care of the ceremony that included the Pledge of Allegiance, “The Star Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America,” the Riderless Horse, and a 21-gun salute.
And the 2,977 names are read aloud for all to hear. That’s why Lauren Porter brought her 10-year-old son Micah. “It’s really powerful. We shouldn’t forget,” Porter said.
The Field of Flags will stay in place at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park through Sept. 19.
