GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — An 18-year-old is facing a long list of charges after Georgia State Patrol says he was driving more than 100 mph during a stunt driving event before crashing into another vehicle and seriously injuring a driver.

According to troopers, the incident happened just after midnight on Sept. 24 near Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Blue Ridge Industrial Parkway in Norcross.

Investigators say Trey Adkins, 18, was participating in a stunt driving takeover when troopers arrived on scene.

State patrol says Adkins then sped away, reaching speeds of 145 mph on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

Troopers say he crashed into another vehicle, seriously injuring the driver before running from the scene.

Residents say cases like this are becoming far too common.

“It’s really infuriating that these people are able to get away before the police get there,” said Kathy Vosper.

Vosper lost her friend, Susan Kirkland, in August after police say a speeding driver caused a deadly crash in Gwinnett County. Two men were later charged with racing and vehicular homicide in that case.

“People need to see the human behind this tragedy and realize that street racing is touching lives,” Vosper said.

On Monday, Adkins was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on 15 charges, including hit-and-run.

While no one died in this latest crash, officials say dangerous stunt driving and street racing have led to multiple tragedies across metro Atlanta.

Among those impacted are Samantha Izaguirre and Symeon Izaguirre, who say they moved away from Gwinnett County after a driver accused of racing crashed into their vehicle and killed their unborn child.

The couple says the sounds of engines revving and reckless driving became too much to bear.

“It affected us more after the accident, especially,” one of them said.

Adkins, who is from Jasper, bonded out of jail Tuesday and is awaiting his first court appearance.
