Nonverbal child found walking alone at night near Georgia Aquarium

ATLANTA — An Atlanta mother faces accusations of cruelty to children after her child was found walking alone downtown.

The Atlanta Police Department said around 11:35 p.m., officers responded to calls of an abandoned child on Luckie Street a short distance from the Georgia Aquarium.

When officers got to the scene, they found a child who appeared to be nonverbal and was only wearing a black T-shirt.

Grady medical personnel arrived to check on the child’s health and see if they were injured before taking them to Hughes Spalding Hospital for treatment and evaluation.

While police canvassed the area and knocked on doors to find a possible guardian, the child’s mother arrived. She was interviewed about how the child went missing, police said.

After further investigation, APD said Kira Jackson was identified as the mother and arrested on a cruelty to children charge.
