ATLANTA — The mother of a man accused of shooting two maintenance workers at an apartment complex and killing one says he is mentally ill and prone to blackouts.

Police said 26-year-old Trevion Webb opened fire on two contract workers at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex on Alison Court Wednesday. Police said Webb opened fire after he got mad about the noise of the renovation work.

One of the workers was shot in the chest and died at the hospital. The other suffered a gunshot wound to the hand. Webb ran from the scene.

Channel 2′s Tom Regan talked to Nahesa Webb, his mother, who helped police take her son into custody.

Webb said her son had another violent outburst at her Clayton County home last weekend.

“He pulled a gun on us and chased his brother down the street,” Webb said. “He told us later that he didn’t remember doing that.”

Webb said police came to the home to investigate that incident, but didn’t arrest him.

Clayton County police clarified the encounter to Channel 2 Action News, saying that Webb was not at the location when they arrived and they took out warrants for his arrests.

The charges Webb faced in Clayton County were for aggravated assault, cruelty to children, theft by taking and simple battery family violence.

Webb believes her son suffers from schizophrenia like his father, but won’t get diagnosed or treated because he doesn’t believe anything is wrong.

“That’s what happens when mental illness goes on for so long, being untreated,” Webb said. “Normal people don’t do this. normal people don’t come to the house and try to shoot their mother and brother. I’ve been crying out for help for so long.”

“He’s been a good student all his life. Never been incarcerated,” Webb said.

She said her heart goes out to the family of the worker killed.

“I just want to offer my deepest condolences and let them know that we are sorry and that my son wasn’t in his right state of mind,” Webb said. “He was just angry with life and because he suffers from severe mental illness, he just didn’t have any control. He just literally blacked out and didn’t know what he was doing.”

Police have not released the name of the man who was killed.
