In a statement posted online, James said several HBCUs across the United States, including several within the Atlanta University Center, received threatening emails aimed at members of their campus communities.

“Out of an abundance of caution, Morris Brown College acted swiftly to communicate with faculty, staff and students through our emergency management system and temporarily transitioned to virtual learning and operations,” James wrote. “After working closely with law enforcement, we have been cleared to resume normal campus operations.”

James thanked the college’s team for their professionalism, preparedness and quick response to ensure the safety of the community.

The FBI said Thursday morning that it was made aware of hoax threats being issued to schools across the state and urged the public to stay vigilant and report anything suspicious.

“The FBI addresses these threats with utmost seriousness, as it puts innocent lives at risk and is a federal crime,” the FBI said in a statement. “While we have no information to indicate a credible threat, we will continue to work with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to gather, share, and act upon threat information as soon as it comes to our attention.”
