Atlanta police cruiser smashed up by suspected drunk driver

ATLANTA — Atlanta police say a suspected drunk driver caused a crash with one of its patrol cruisers, causing major damage.

Officers were called to Peachtree Rd. and Peachtree Battle Ave. around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, where they found a black Mercedes GLE and a City of Atlanta police car that had crashed.

A Channel 2 Action News photographer spotted the patrol car with major damage to the driver’s side and the airbag deployed.

Investigators say the driver of the Mercedes was inconsistent in explaining how the crash happened, as well as showing signs of being under the influence. They say he was slurring his speech and officers could smell alcohol.

The driver, later identified as James Rankin, was taken to Piedmont Hospital for blood collection and medical clearance.

He was later taken to Atlanta City Jail on charges of DUI, reckless driving and more traffic charges.

Police did not comment on if the officer was injured.
