On Sept. 29, investigators with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office received information that an infant had been buried on property along Jones Ferry Road several months earlier.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and worked with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to search the property.

Using witness statements, a cadaver dog, a drone and ground-probing equipment, investigators located a possible burial site. During the excavation, they found a wooden box buried several feet underground.

The box contained human remains consistent with a near full-term baby, which were sent to the medical examiner’s office, according to the sheriff’s office.
