Elderly woman found after going on overnight walk, falling in NE GA woods

HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. — January 22 could have been a terrible day for one northeast Georgia family after their elderly family member fell in the woods.

Habersham County deputies say around 4:20 a.m. that morning, they learned their family member in her late 90s’ got up to go for a walk around 1:30 a.m., but had not returned.

The woman was reportedly wearing thin pants, a down puffer coat, and shoes, then went for a walk on Goshen Mountain Road in the Batesville community.

Habersham County Sheriff’s Office deputies, along with Habersham County Emergency Services responded to the area to look for the elderly woman.

First, Banks County Sheriff’s Office bloodhound responded to try and track the woman’s trail.

Officials also deployed a drone to locate the woman.

Around 5 a.m., the woman was located by Deputy Justin McClain said Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Wurtz.

Officials say she made it 50 yards down the road and fell in the nearby woods. She had been there for several hours, officials say.

“There was about 15 to 20 feet of grass, then woods and she was over in the wood-line,” Wurtz said. “Her pants caught his eye. He had already ridden by a couple of times. She was alert, conscious, and breathing but very cold.”

The woman, whose name is not being released, was transported by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Habersham for care.
