Traffic concerns grow as Braves' opening day approaches

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Just 10 days before the first event at SunTrust Park, officials are still fine tuning traffic and parking plans.

The stadium sits just across the Smryna line. Police Chief David Lee isn't sure what will happen once the big attraction opens up.

"I think there's a lot of unknown," Lee told Channel 2’s Ross Cavitt.

SunTrust Park will host its first game in just a few days and Smyrna police recently bought two three-wheelers to work the crowds and respond to accidents.

"This way they'll be able to respond to the scene very quickly and hopefully be able to clear it up," Lee said.

The chief is in a tough position. The new home of the Braves is not in the city of Smyrna, but just across the street.

But fans will be in his city.

For police, it’s not just vehicular traffic, but pedestrians as well. It's a long walk from parking lots to The Battery and SunTrust Park, so police will have to look out for those pedestrians.

There are also five private entities that applied and got permission from the county to sell parking on game days.

The lots are spread in all directions from the stadium. The five lots will combine to add 1,000 spaces to the 14,000 the Braves already have in place.

Just as Lee is curious how it will all go down, fans are saying they see few signs around the park directing them where to go.

“I don't see anything about parking or a parking deck. I don't know," one fan told Cavitt.
