ATHENS, Ga. — It’s official: Anthony Edwards is heading for the NBA. The Georgia men’s basketball freshman made his decision Friday.

He leaves after just one year at Georgia, which was cut short when the SEC tournament was canceled.

Edwards is projected to be a lottery pick in this year’s NBA Draft. The guard posted a statement on his social media accounts Friday thanking the UGA community.

Earlier this month, he became the first Georgia player voted SEC Freshman of the Year by league coaches since the award was created in 2001.

Edwards also earned All-SEC Second Team and All-Freshman Team honors.

Edwards grew up in Atlanta and played at Holy Spirit Prep School, where he became the nation’s top-ranked high school basketball player.

He decided to stay close to home when he chose UGA over Florida State, Kentucky and North Carolina.

The NBA Draft is currently set for June 25. However with the season suspended over the coronavirus, that date could change if the season doesn’t return soon.
