Trial Witness: Aimee Michael Caused Fatal Crash

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — An expert witness for the prosecution testified 24-year-old Aimee Michael triggered the multicar crash that killed five people on Camp Creek Parkway on Easter 2009.

Ronald Kirk, a specialist on accident analysis and reconstruction, told a Fulton County jury that Michael initially lost control of the sedan she was driving and over-corrected.

"The cause of the accident was the BMW leaving the right lane, and the vehicle went into the other left lane and struck the Mercedes in that lane and the rest of the collision unfolded," Kirk testified on Tuesday.

Police said the Mercedes veered over the median and struck another vehicle and burst into flames. In a police interview played for the jury on Monday, Michael tearfully admitted a role in the crash, but denied she was at fault. Her lawyers have told the jury the Mercedes hit her car first and both vehicles went out of control.

During the police interview, Michael also admitted having her vehicle repaired to hide the damage.

Michael is on trial for vehicular homicide and other charges. The state concluded their testimony Tuesday and the defense began their case.
