SEATTLE — One student was killed and a suspect is in custody after a shooting Tuesday at a Seattle high school, officials said.
The student was fatally shot inside Ingraham High School in the Haller Lake neighborhood of the city, KIRO-TV reported.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell confirmed during a news conference that the student died after being treated at a hospital, according to The Associated Press. The victim was not identified, the news organization reported.
According to Seattle police Chief Adrian Diaz, the suspected shooter was also a student, KIRO reported.
Wednesday’s classes have been canceled, according to the television station.
According to the Seattle Police Department, officials received reports of a shooting at the high school at about 9:55 a.m. PST. Officers entered the school and discovered one person with a gunshot wound and provided aid until paramedics arrived.
The suspect was arrested at about 11:10 a.m., and the reunification of students and their families began about 30 minutes later, police said.
“We in the city joined a long list of cities this year that have had school shootings,” Diaz told reporters.
“My heart breaks for the student who lost their life and for their family, friends, and the entire Ingraham High School community,” Harrell said in a statement. “Schools must be safe havens for our youth to learn, grow, and thrive, and our students must trust that they will be safe in the classroom.”
