SAN DIEGO — Padres outfielder Tommy Pham was in good condition after suffering a stab wound during an altercation outside a San Diego strip club, authorities said.
Pham, 32, was stabbed in the lower back at 10:35 p.m. Sunday and underwent surgery, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
San Diego police said Pham was stabbed about 10:35 outside Pacers Showgirls International, the newspaper reported. None of Pham’s organs were damaged, the Union-Tribune reported. Pham received three stitches for the wound, which pierced three layers of skin, KFMB reported. Police described the injury as a “slash wound” and said it was not life-threatening.
According to police, Pham was leaving the club and encountered an argument occurring near his car, according to the Union-Tribune. Witnesses told police that Pham was assaulted after he asked the people to move away from his car, the newspaper reported.
“We are aware of the incident last night involving Tommy Pham,” the Padres said in a statement. “He was treated at UC San Diego Health and is currently in good condition. He is expected to make a full recovery. The San Diego Police Department is actively investigating the incident and we will have no further comment at this time.”
Investigators are uncertain how many people were involved in the incident, KNSD reported.
In a statement, Pham thanked hospital staff and police investigators.
“I’d like to thank the incredible medical staff at UC San Diego Health for taking such great care of me," Pham said. "I truly appreciate the hard work of the SDPD as well as they continue their search for the suspects. While it was a very traumatic and eye-opening experience for me, I’m on the road to recovery and I know I’ll be back to my offseason training routine in no time.”
Pham has played seven seasons in the major leagues, playing for the St Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays before coming to San Diego. He had just finished his first season with the Padres, appearing in 31 games and batting .211 with three home runs and 12 RBI. Pham appeared in six games during the Padres' postseason in 2020, hitting .462 in the National League wild-card series against the Cardinals. He also appeared in three games in the NL divisional series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
