According to KPTV and KGW, a judge sentenced Shalondre Adams, 25, of Gresham, on Tuesday, more than three years after crews found 1-year-old Dominick Smith unresponsive Sept. 21, 2017, in a Southeast 169th Avenue home. The boy, who had been assaulted and suffered a brain injury, died from his wounds, authorities said.

Investigators later arrested Adams, who was dating Smith’s mother at the time and often cared for the child when she was working, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release Tuesday.

“By pleading guilty to one count of assault in the first degree and one count of manslaughter in the first degree, Adams admitted that he assaulted Dominick, which resulted in serious physical injuries and death under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life,” said the release, adding that investigators never uncovered a motive for the assault.
