ALPENA, Mich. — A highway detour is a normal occurrence, but the reason for a traffic reroute was anything but ordinary.
The Michigan Air National Guard used M-32 to land a jet on a highway and, by doing so, made history, WJBK reported.
They also performed a takeoff of the A-10 Thunderbolt II from the highway.
The 127th Wing shared a video of the plane making a smooth landing.
It was part of a training exercise called Northern Strike, Military Times reported and was the first time that a modern Air Force plane was landed on a U.S. road on purpose.
Michigan State Police warned drivers of the detour and the military exercise. Troopers also had a bit of fun once the plane landed, saying that “no speeding citations were issued.”
In all, four A-10s and two C-146A Wolfhouds used the highway as a runway Thursday, Military Times reported.
