Banner plane crashes into the ocean off the shore of Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — An advertisement banner plane crashed into the ocean at a popular beach on Monday afternoon.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department responded to the crash around 11:30 a.m., according to Channel 2′s ABC affiliate WPDE.

“We looked over and we saw the banner plane coming by, and the banner plane, all of a sudden the banner started going lower, and lower and lower, and my wife said ‘Oh my God the banner is in the water,’” a witness Wilton Jordan told WPDE ABC15.

Cpl. Chris Starling told the news station that only the pilot was on board at the time of the crash. He was treated on the scene, according to officials.

WPDE reports that the plane was a Piper PA-18 that is registered to Barnstorms Aerial Advertising.

“There were a couple of people that grabbed the rope that was holding the banner and were trying to pull that in. A bunch of other guys had the wing and we trying to kind of pull it in with the waves, but then also lift it,” witness Ryan Cagno told ABC15.

Starling told WPDE that Myrtle Beach police are working with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
