SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A 7-year-old girl is dead after gunfire erupted outside a birthday party in South Bend, Indiana, authorities said.
According to the South Bend Tribune and WBND, the incident occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday outside an East Donald Street home, where dozens of people were celebrating a child’s birthday. A shooter or shooters inside a passing vehicle opened fire on the home, striking another child, Chrisyah Stephens, WBND reported.
Emergency crews rushed Stephens to a nearby hospital, where she died, according to the Tribune.
South Bend police have not said whether they’ve arrested any suspects in connection with the case, the news outlets reported.
In a statement, police Chief Scott Ruszkowski said the girl was one of four people struck in shootings over the weekend.
“We’re almost at 100 people criminally shot this year,” the statement read. “As a community, we can no longer accept this senseless violence and we all have to do our part.”
