According to WPRI-TV, Jamestown police arrested Ann Garnett, 65, on Sunday after authorities found two black Labrador retrievers and a keeshond unresponsive inside a vehicle with closed windows. Although the car was running, its air conditioner was broken, authorities said.

Garnett, the dogs' owner, was charged with three counts each of unnecessary animal cruelty and confining an animal in a vehicle.

Emergency crews and witnesses attempted to save the animals, which had been inside the vehicle "for an extended period," the Providence Journal reported. The dogs then were taken to a nearby animal hospital and pronounced dead, WPRI reported.
