NEW YORK — A toddler has died after he was struck by a New York subway train Wednesday evening, authorities said.

According to The New York Times, the incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. as a woman and her 2-year-old son headed toward a platform at Manhattan's Fulton Street station. After the pair "became separated," the boy "was struck by a northbound No. 2 train," New York City Transit tweeted Wednesday night.

Police are still investigating the incident, which they believe was accidental, WCBS-TV reported.

Emergency responders rushed the child to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, officials said.

"All of us here at the Rail Control Center are heartbroken for the family involved in tonight's incident," the transit agency said in another tweet. "We cannot imagine their pain, and we cannot adequately convey our thoughts in 280 characters, so we'll just remind everyone out there to be kind and take care of one another."
