DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.,None — Police are searching for the person who shot and killed a 13-year-old boy and stabbed the victim nearly 30 times.
Channel 2's Tom Jones spoke to the teen's mother about his actions right before his death.
The victim, 13-year-old Marquis Overstreet, was found in a wooded area between two homes in the Biffle Downs subdivision in Stone Mountain. People in the neighborhood told Jones that he had been hanging there with another 13-year-old. His family is taking his death extremely hard.
I'm trying not to. Oh God," said the victim's mother, Keisha Langhorne.
Langhorne tearfully told Jones that she is trying not to second-guess over how she disciplined her 13-year-old son.
Marquis violated his curfew and had gotten tattoos.
He was just getting them left and right. And anywhere, said Langhorne.
Langhorne put her son on punishment and that's when he ran away.
On Wednesday, landscapers found his body in the wooded area between two homes.
The seventh grader had been murdered.
Detectives arrived to give his family the horrible news.
They told us that he was shot once and stabbed 25 to 30 times, said Michael Langhorne, the victims grandfather:
Police believe he was murdered Monday or Tuesday.
Marquis' family said he idolized rap star Lil Wayne.
He would go around saying Lil Wayne was his father, Keisha Langhorne said.
She said her son, as young as he was, may have been involved in gang activity.
Still, the family can't understand the level of violence that led to his death.
What could a 13-year-old have done to deserve this? said Michael Langhorne.
Just pay close attention to your children. You never know what they doing, said Keisha Langhorne.
DeKalb County police are asking anyone with information about the crime to give them a call.
