Suspected Drunken Driver Leads Police On U-Haul Chase

SMYRNA, Ga. — A suspected drunken driver led authorities on a chase in a 15-foot U-Haul truck down Georgia Highway 85, a spokesman the Georgia State Patrol said.

Troopers arrested Victor Montgomery, 43, of Atlanta, Tuesday afternoon.

Smyrna police told Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Jones that they received a call about a shoplifter stealing beer from a gas station on Concord in Smyrna.

Officers said Montgomery traveled on Interstate 285 from Cobb County south to Fulton County where he entered Clayton County and traveled south on Highway 85 through Riverdale. Troopers took over the chase near the intersection of Interstate 285 and Riverdale Road.

Troopers used a PIT maneuver near Pointe South Parkway to stop the vehicle, causing it to run into a ditch where the driver was taken into custody. No one was injured.

Authorities said they recovered a 12 pack of Heineken from the U-Haul.

Montgomery was charged with DUI, driving on a suspended license and fleeing and attempting to elude police. He was turned over to Smyrna police.
