State Rep. Finds ‘Green Meat, Rotten Food'

ATLANTA — A state representative said a Southwest Atlanta grocery store had a terrible stench and discolored meat.

Rep. Ralph Long took pictures at the Super Giant Foods on Campbellton Road after some nearby senior citizens complained about what they called rotten food.

"The smell was horrible," said neighbor Ernestine Faircloth.

Long said he inspected the grocery store in March after hearing complaints. Long said the meat appeared to have a green color to it and the tomatoes looked rotten.

"I found meat in the coolers with cobwebs and spiders and exposed equipment," Long said.

Residents at a nearby senior living center said they were disturbed by the food conditions at the store.

"We're very dependent on the grocery store. A lot of them walk up the street and do their shopping," said Faircloth.

Long said he alerted state inspectors.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Carol Sbarge went to the store to see if conditions improved. Sbarge said she smelled disinfectant. Sbarge said the manager wouldn't let her take any pictures of the meat coolers but was able to see the coolers and saw no spoiled meats.

The manager told Sbarge that he has told his employees to focus on putting fresh meat out daily.

"They miss the meat. To pick it up but I keep on them and they pick it up," said manager Woo Le.

Long said when he came into the store, the floors were dirty. Le said since then, he has made sure his employees keep them clean.

The state department of agriculture said they were called to investigate.
