Spectacular Sight In Atlanta Skies Tonight

ATLANTA — Atlantans will be treated to a spectacular sight in the skies on Wednesday.

Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meterologist Glenn Burns says several planets will align with the moon, followed by a very visible meteor shower.

"Just after sunset in the western sky you will see the crescent moon. Next to the moon will be Venus, Mercury, Saturn, and Mars. Then from 10 p.m. until dawn tomorrow we will have the annual Perseid Meteor Shower," Burns said

"Look to the northeast after 10 p.m. The meteor shower should peak just before dawn."

The Perseid meteor shower is caused by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. Every 133 years the comet swings through the inner solar system and leaves behind a trail of debris.

Earth passes through these trails each August. When the comet bits enter our atmosphere, they vaporize, creating the meteors.
