Smelly Tap Water Linked To Wild Animals

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — Tens of thousands of metro Atlantans may notice a strange smell in their tap water.

A road crew dismantled and removed a beaver dam in Henry County causing swamp water from the dam to flow into a reservoir that serves northern Clayton County.

"We estimate that about 12 million gallons may have drained out of that swamp into the reservoir," said Mike Thomas with the Clayton County Water Department.

Thomas said the water is harmless and doesn't need to be boiled, but the musty odor and taste is very noticeable to some customers.

"It tastes um, like a bottom of a lake, a stale kind of a taste," said Phyllis Haley.

Officials said they are buying water from Atlanta and DeKalb County to reduce the amount of water used in the reservoir as they continue to treat it with chemicals to eliminate the smell.
