GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The roof of a Gwinnett County senior living facility collapsed Thursday just before 10 a.m.
The facility had to be evacuated and more than 100 residents from the Golden Living Center on Scenic Highway had to be moved to other senior living facilities, officials told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh.
"We have been able to account for all the residents, all the contractors who were doing roof work at the time as well as workers who were in the kitchen," said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, spokesperson for Gwinnettt County Fire and Emergency Services.
The portion of the roof that collapsed was in the dining area, officials said.
"They're extremely fortunate. There would have been activities going on in the dining area later on in the day," said Rutledge.
News Chopper 2 showed shingles and debris covering a wing of the building where the frame of the roof caved in.
Fire officials said the roof was under repair.
No one was in the dining area at the time and there were no reported injuries, officials told Kavanaugh.
Officials told Kavanaugh on Thursday afternoon that all the residents at the facility had to be temporarily moved because all the utilities had been cut to the building.
Also, there was structural damage to part of the building, according to officials, making it unsafe for residents to stay in part of the building.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was at the site Thursday to investigate if the roofing company violated any standards while repairing the roof.
The executive director of the Golden Living Center e-mailed Channel 2 stating that residents will not return to the facility until the roof is repaired and the building inspected.
