Robber Lures iPad Sellers Over Craigslist

ATLANTA — You've heard the warnings before -- watch out where you agree to meet, or buy and sell things on the Internet.

Channel 2's Ryan Young found an example involving Craigslist.

Atlanta police told Young that they had to set up fake accounts to catch a man stealing iPads.

The robberies happened over a two-week period, and detectives told Channel 2 Action News that people trying to sell iPads were lured to the Thomasville Boulevard area of southeast Atlanta. Once there, a man would snatch the iPads and run, detectives said.

One time, one of the victims fought back and was beaten badly, according to investigators.

In another, police said the robber used a gun to demand an iPad.

Police told Young that buyers should be cautious when meeting to make a transaction.

"Common sense should always prevail if you're going to meet to do a cash transaction. Do it in a well-lit place," said Atlanta police Sgt. Curtis Davenport.

Atlanta police set up an undercover sting and within in days caught Frank Howard, who according to police, tried to steal their empty iPad boxes.

So far none of the stolen iPads have been recovered.
