Police: Man Cons Dealerships Out Of Cars

DALTON, Ga. — A 49-year-old man is wanted after he duped a car dealership into giving him a car, Dalton police said.

The accused man, Charles William Duncan, went to Adventure Chevrolet on West Walnut Avenue Aug. 7 looking for a new car, Dalton police spokesman Bruce Frazier said. Duncan told a salesman that he was due to receive a large cash settlement after suffering an injury while working as a prison guard, Frazier said.

Dalton Police Department Charles William Duncan Charles William Duncan Frazier said Duncan showed the salesman some paperwork, wrote a $36,151 check and drove away with a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado. The dealership mailed the vehicle's title to Duncan, but then learned that the check was bad and that the account had been closed, Frazier said.

Two days later, Duncan pawned the car's title at a title loan business in Fort Oglethorpe, Frazier said. He said that loan was then paid in full by the Charlie Rogers Ford auto dealership in Dayton, Tenn.

Duncan then took the truck to that dealership and traded it for a new Ford Mustang, arranging for the dealership to pay off his loan from the title pawn business as part of their agreement, Frazier said. Charlie Rogers Ford did so, and received the vehicle's title, Frazier said.

William Duncan is wanted for deposit account fraud and theft by taking. Investigators said they believe he is living somewhere around Chattanooga, Tenn. They said when he bought the truck in Dalton, he showed a Georgia's driver's license with a Dalton address that does not exist.
