Police Chase of ATM Thieves Ends With Crash

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A police pursuit of suspected ATM thieves ended with a wreck that shut down Interstate 285 on Saturday morning during one of the busiest travel weekends.

The suspects burglarized the machine at South DeKalb Mall in Decatur around 3 a.m., according to DeKalb police spokesman Jason Gagnon.

When police caught up with the group, they tried to run over an officer, Gagnon said.

Labor Day weekend travelers woke up to several westbound lane closures after the thieves' car crashed into a wall on I-285, police said.

There were no injuries reported.

One of the thieves was arrested at the scene of the crime, but three others fled on foot, Gagnon said.

Police tracked down another suspect at a Home Depot parking lot, where they said he was in the middle of a car jacking. Two others are still on the loose.
