Police Believe Random Bullet Killed Father

ATLANTA — Atlanta police were looking for the person who fired several shots at random, killing a father and nearly hitting a baby.

Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Mark Winne talked with the detective who said he has no suspects nearly two years after the shooting.

Atlanta police homicide Detective David Coleman said an apparently stray bullet hit Jerry Wingfield as he walked from one apartment building to another at 1033 Hollywood Road in northwest Atlanta.

Dot Wingfield, the victim's mother, talked to Winne about the crime."He's my only son. I have three daughters, and I asked God to give me a son and he did, and then man took him away. So I'm very upset and worried about it," Wingfield said.

"I think that somebody was either showing off a weapon, or just randomly, recklessly shooting in this direction. I don't think it was intentional," Coleman said.

The shooter was in an area by the garbage bins and the trees by the front of the apartment complex according to Coleman.

If you have any information about the case, call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS or 404-577-8477. You could be eligible for a reward, and you do not have to give your name.
