Pit Bull Attacks 89-Year-Old Man

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — An 89-year-old Hall County man is recovering from a pit bull attack, but his dog will not make it.

Aaron Sewell said he saw some dogs while he was walking his own dog Friday. He thought they were on a leash when one came charging at him and his terrier.

"I hit my head on the cement there and scratched my arm in several places" Sewell said.

The pit bull belongs to a couple who lives across the street from Sewell.

The attack left Sewell with bumps and bruises. His terrier was killed.

"My baby was laying right here with his little throat slit from here to here," Marie Sewell said. "My husband was laying right up above him on the ground."

Animal Control gave the pit bull owner, Christina Smith, a citation. The dog was taken and quarantined.

Channel 2 Action News reporter George Howell tried to talk to the pit bull's owner, but Howell was told to get off the property.

Gainesville police said Smith will likely not face charges in connection with the attack.

"The judge didn't feel that we had enough to issue any further charges," Gainesville police Lt. Keith Lingerfelt said. "There wasn't any intent on behalf of the owners of the dog."

"This incident could have killed my father," said Connie Jones. "I can not believe there will not be a warrant or any charges filed."

Sewell's family told Channel 2 Action News they may file a civil lawsuit.
