Parts Of Georgia Under Severe Drought

ATLANTA — New data shows parts of Georgia are under severe to extreme drought conditions.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist David Chandley said the northern third of Georgia is drought free.

Chandley said the middle part of Georgia is on the verge of a severe drought and parts of south Georgia are in an extreme drought, a change since the beginning of spring.

The dividing line appears to be right along Interstate 20 and points south.

Chandley said Atlanta has only received 50 percent of the normal rainfall for the month of May, but has totaled 110 percent for the past 90 days.

He said Atlanta is just over an inch behind the average for the past year.

North Georgia lakes are at or just below full summer pool, according to Chandley. He said Alatoona Lake is right at full pool and Lake Lanier is 1.7 feet below full pool.

Areas now in a severe drought are roughly south of a Franklin-Barnesville-Milledgeville line, according to Chandley.
