Officer-Involved Shooting Erupts Behind Motel

UNION CITY, Ga.,None — A Fulton County police officer shot a driver who ran from a stolen car early Friday, Union City police said.

The shooting happened behind a Motel 6 on Flat Shoals Road in Union City.

When the officer spotted a Honda Accord reported stolen from a MARTA Station, the officer stopped the car at a Chevron gas station, police said.

“As the officer was attempting to arrest the driver of the vehicle, the driver struck the officer and fled into the woods,” Union City police Detective Gloria Hodgson told Channel 2’s Darryn Moore.

The officer chased the driver to an area behind the motel before the shooting, but the details of their encounter are unclear.

“He was shot once,” Hodgson said.

Police did not reveal the status of the suspect’s condition. The Union City Police Department is in charge of the investigation.
