DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.,None — Neighbors said a home on their DeKalb County street is more than an eye sore. They are calling it a hazard.
Only a few walls of the home are still standing, and residents said the property has become a home to copperhead snakes.
Its a hazard. I cant even let my dogs out because they have snakes in here, said Wayne Avant, who lives next door to the home.
Channel 2 Action News reporter Craig Lucie walked around the home, where the garage is starting to cave in. The roof is also gone after part of house on Golfcrest Trace caught on fire.
We moved here in April 2006, and it looked as bad as it does now. Its been a long time, said another neighbor, Amanda Smith.
Smith said shes been trying since April 2006 to get someone to clean up the mess. A crew started to a year ago but, Smith said, They left after five days, and they left it in worse condition than it was before.
An empty swimming pool is one of neighbors' biggest concerns. Lucie pointed out how a 10-foot pine tree is now growing out of it.
Weve contacted people about it and called code enforcement. I cant tell you how many times, and now, I have a toddler and its dangerous, Smith said.
Lucie tracked down the man who owns the home and told him about his neighbors concerns. He answered before shutting the door saying, Ive got plans to clean it up in the next two weeks.
The plans are unclear, but neighbors are optimistic.
If he handles it in two weeks, then thats water under the bridge. And if its not done, Ill call you again, Smith told Lucie.
Neighbors are also upset after the county came and repaved all of the roads in the area except theirs. County workers told them they could not rip up the street to repave until the owner cuts back the trees and roots that are now growing through the pavement.
