2 killed, 9 hurt in Brown University shooting in Rhode Island, suspect sought

ATLANTA — Hours after a shooting that killed at least two people and wounded nine others, a suspect in the shooting was still being sought at Brown University in Rhode Island.

Those on campus were being urged to remain sheltered-in-place. Police are working to escort people to safe zones, according to the latest university alert at 11 p.m.

The university said the shooting took place at Barus & Holley Engineering, which a seven-story structure that houses the School of Engineering and Physics Department, according to the school’s website.

The eight shooting victims were in critical but stable condition at the hospital, the university said.

University President Christina Paxson said she was told that 10 people who were shot were students. Another person was injured by fragments from the shooting, but it was not clear if the victim was a student, she told the Associated Press.

Providence Police Department Deputy Chief Timothy O’Hara told reporters that the suspect is a male who was dressed in black.

The mayor said a person preliminarily thought to be involved was detained but was later determined to have no involvement.

The shooting took place during the second day of final exams.

Brown University earlier said it was “coordinating with multiple law enforcement agencies on site. Emergency medical on scene.”

A police officer warned members of the media to take cover in vehicles earlier because the area was still active scene. Officers carrying assault weapons and emergency vehicles lined many of the streets surrounding the engineering school.

President Donald Trump said late in the afternoon that he has been briefed on the shooting.

“God bless the victims and the families of the victims!” he said on his social media site.

The university retracted its earlier claim that a suspect was in custody and is telling those on campus to continue to shelter in place, lock doors, silence cell phones and stay hidden.

Brown University also said there were reports of shots on Governor Street, but that turned out to be false.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
