ATLANTA,None — A driver fleeing police was killed in a car crash on Saturday, police said.
Atlanta police said an officer spotted a Toyota Sienna driver weaving on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at about 1:09 a.m. on Saturday. When the officer pulled over the driver, later identified as 36-year-old Roman Garcia, Garcia began to approach the officer, Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said.
Police said the officer told Garcia to get back in his car and requested help from another unit. When Garcia saw another officer headed toward them, he started running, Jones said.
"It is not known at this time why Mr. Garcia ran from the officers or why he ran out into traffic," Jones said.
Garcia ran from the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive bridge, down an embankment and into traffic on Interstate 85, where he was fatally struck by a vehicle in the southbound lanes, Jones said.
All of the southbound lanes of I-285 were shut down while crews worked to clear the scene. All lanes reopened at about 3:30 a.m.
Jones said the driver who hit Garcia is not facing any charges.
