Dashcam shows police using Taser to arrest DUI suspect

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga — Alpharetta police said dash-cam video of a DUI traffic stop is a good example of why you should cooperate with officers.

Police gave Channel 2 Action News the video of the traffic stop. It quickly escalated into a fight with officers and the suspect on the losing end of a Taser.

A policeman could be heard asking the 39-year-old Garfield Shouder, "Had anything to drink tonight?"

Shouder responded, "I was just at her house and I had a glass of wine."

In the background of the video, you could see Shouder's car crashed into a guardrail at the on-ramp to Georgia 400 at Haynes Bridge Road.

When officers confronted Shouder, Officer George Gordon said officers could smell alcohol and  noticed Shouder’s eyes were bloodshot. However, Shouder denied he was drunk.

“I’m not a drinker, I don’t drink,” Shouder can be heard saying.

Gordon said things went downhill after Shouder failed a sobriety test and officers attempted to arrest him.

Shouder can be heard saying, “I know my rights, I know my rights.”

"They attempted to get him in the back of the patrol car. He kept resisting. After numerous verbal commands, he would not get into the car," Gordon said.

That's when Gordon says officers Tased Shouder to get him in the car and off to jail.

Police say this is a good example of why you shouldn't fight back in this kind of situation.

Shouder is out of jail and faces charges including DUI, failure to maintain lane and obstruction of an officer.

Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik tried to reach him by phone for comment, but did not hear back.
