GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Today is a painful anniversary for the family of a Gwinnett County mother whose slaying remains a mystery.
Nique Leili's husband told police his wife took off one year ago Monday. A search party found her body a week later.
Lieli's family now believes she was killed one year ago today.
Her sister said the family is trying to move on despite having so few answers.
"The first thing I thought was wow, it's a year without my sister," Amy Elk told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh.
Elk said her daily phone calls with her big sister abruptly ended one year ago. The 44-year-old mother of three was gone. Her husband, Matt Leili, told police the last time he saw her, they were arguing and she threatened to leave. He waited two days to report her missing.
Channel 2 Action News was there a week later when a volunteer search party fanned out around their Lawrenceville neighborhood off Collins Hill Road.
One of Nique's co-workers found her body in the woods underneath some leaves.
"And I heard her scream," Elk said. "Just seeing her hair and knowing that was her, you can't un-see and un-hear things."
Police said Leili was face-down, naked, and her body was badly decomposed.
The medical examiner called her death highly suspicious but could not determine a cause of death.
"I think we were all hoping for some sort of resolution by this time, but there doesn't seem to be much of anything," Elk said.
"There are several matters under investigation that we cannot discuss, but by no means is this investigation closed or over with," said Cpl. Jake Smith with the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Gwinnett county police said Matthew Leili was and remains a suspect in his wife's disappearance and death, but he has not been charged with anything.
Police said two new detectives are giving the case a fresh look and the case remains a priority.
A priority for Elk is learning to accept she may never know what happened to her sister.
"[I'm] going to light a candle and remember her as best we can and then get through until tomorrow," she said.
As we first told you in February, Matt Leili relocated to Vermont with his two daughters. Police said he was well within his legal rights to do so.
We reached out to his attorney for comment Monday, but have not heard back yet.
