BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — The abrupt closing of 10 Atlanta area restaurants owned by the Here to Serve Corporation has people shocked the chain went under.
Town Brookhaven is one of the city's most successful merchant districts where three of the company's restaurants were located.
"I was absolutely shocked. It happened so suddenly. They're here, and then they're gone," pub owner Bill Brown said.
Brown owns an eatery right around the corner from Noche, Sucks, and Smash, three of the 10 restaurants operated by Here to Serve that all closed Monday.
Former workers trying to get paid Wednesday said it's all up in the air.
"We're gathered right now at Smash just waiting for the next word. The managers are trying to relay information as fast as they can, but even still, a lot of the it is wishy-washy. We're not sure what to believe anymore," former employee Jason Sayers told Channel 2's Berndt Petersen.
Former Here to Serve owner Tom Catherall visited with a couple of employees outside the Brookhaven Noche.
He told Petersen he feels awful for them. Catherall hopes they get their final paychecks and new jobs very soon. That's where Bill Brown steps in.
"It's like losing a member of your family. When the plug got pulled, all these folks were devastated. They looked like the 'walking wounded' coming in here. 'Can we help? Can we help?' Yes. Let me give you a job," Brown said.
Brown says he hired four former Here to Serve workers.
