DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County homeowner is counting her blessings after a police chase came to a violent end in her front yard.
It left Nancy Elliote’s SUV damaged and her mailbox destroyed at her home in the Central Oaks subdivision near Stone Mountain.
One suspect is still on the run, Channel 2’s Michael Seiden learned.
If getting woken up in the middle of the night wasn’t bad enough, Elliote said she spent the rest of the morning dealing with her insurance company after a police chase ended.
Just before 3:45 a.m. DeKalb County police say officers spotted a car that had driven away from a traffic stop in Stone Mountain.
When officers tried to pull it over, investigators say the driver took off, sparking a chase that ended on Park Gate Place.
“I think is where they actually hit from this side,” Elliote told Seiden as they surveyed the damage.
She says she was sound asleep when her next-door neighbor called to tell her a police chase had ended in her front yard.
When she walked outside, she found her SUV damaged, her mailbox ripped from the ground and her neighborhood filled with police.
“When you actually get out here and you see the damage, God, you just couldn’t even imagine, especially after I saw my mailbox was halfway down the street,” Elliote said.
Police say the car slammed into Elliotte’s SUV. It narrowly missed several homes before coming to a stop.
Police say both people inside the car ran after the crash. Officers captured the passenger but are still searching for the driver.
Elliotte says investigators told her the suspects were teenagers and that guns were found inside the rental car. Police officials have not confirmed that information.
Elliote said this was the second time since moving here in 1991 that a police chase has ended in her front yard, and she believes it’s time for police to re-evaluate their pursuit policy.
