NICE, France — Two Americans were among 84 people killed in an attack in Nice, France, family members tell ABC News.
A truck hit dozens of pedestrians on the Promenade des Anglais near the center of town in Nice Thursday
A witness told the Associated Press that there were “bodies everywhere.”
French President Francois Hollande has extended the state of emergency that was due to end July 26 another three months.
"We have seen extreme violence and it's obvious we must do everything to fight terrorism," Hollande said.
Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native who spoke to the AP near Nice's Promenade du Paillon, said that he saw a truck drive into the crowd and then witnessed the man emerge with a gun and start shooting.
Channel 2 Action News spoke with Georgia Tech student Brendan Phillips, who was in Nice when the truck crashed into the crowd at Bastille Days celebration.
"We turned around and heard yelling and screaming and everyone running towards us, and when we looked there were four to five police cars going by us and so we began running in the direction people were running," Phillips said.
The mayor put the city on lockdown and is urging people to stay home.
Hollande promised his military will show more force in Syria and Iraq.
