Halloween will look a little different this year and communities across metro Atlanta are figuring out how to celebrate while staying safe during the pandemic.
The CDC and local police departments are encouraging people not to have big parties and handle trick-or-treating activities differently. Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes spoke with families about their plans.
Neil and Jamila Craney said their South Fulton neighborhood is always busy this time of year. But its annual truck-or-treating event was canceled and families are trying to figure out other plans.
“Everyone I’ve been talking to is talking about Halloween parties and ya know kind of carrying on – but with our kids being so young, that’s not really a luxury that we have,” Jamila Craney said.
The Craneys told Fernandes they have leaned toward not celebrating Halloween at all.
“Just doing our part to keep everybody safe. We understand it’s a holiday. But everybody’s health is more important than candy,” Jamila Craney said.

But what are the restrictions when it comes to Halloween in Georgia? Fernandes checked with Gov. Brian’s Kemp’s office since the state’s COVID-19 restrictions are extended through Halloween.
The governor’s office said any gatherings over 50 people can be shut down by law enforcement if people aren’t six feet apart and not wearing masks. Parties up to 50 people are allowed without social distancing even though it’s encouraged.
When it comes to trick-or-treating, there are no restrictions that keep kids from doing that. However, officials are encouraging parents to make sure it’s done in a safe way.
If you still want to hand out candy from your home, police suggest you wrap the candy individually and leave it in a bowl in your drive way or somewhere far from your front door.
