Waffle House employee poisoned at work has ‘long road ahead'

DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. — A Waffle House employee drugged with methamphetamine at work is making amazing progress, his mother says.

A waitress is accused of putting the near fatal dose of the drug in 37-year-old Brian Mikeals' drink in December.

Police say video inside the restaurant on Highway 53 in Dawson County shows Sonserea Evans take a cup into the bathroom and then walk it back out while Mikeals was outside.

Mikeals, the father of a 10-year-old daughter, spent 40 days in a coma.

“It's the most horrible thing that a momma can go through. I've seen him lay there not knowing if he was going to live,” his mother, Pam Pavesi, said.

Pavesi said months later, her son is finally making progress.

“It seemed like God laid a healing hand on him, and once God laid a healing hand on him something happened every single day,” she said. “He’s saying sentences. He's trying to get off the bed, and he's trying to sit up on his own. He's trying."

Evans’ motive is still unknown.

“I don't know. Nobody knows. Nobody understands why this is happening,” Pavesi said.

Police arrested Evans earlier this week. Pavesi said she’s tired of hearing about the suspect.

“It all centers on her. What about with what my son is going through? What about him just lying in that bed?” she said.

Pavesi said Mikeals doesn’t have insurance, but with the help of the community he can get into a rehabilitation center and work to make a full recovery.

“We want him to be able to live a full, normal life again,” she said.

The family set up a GoFundMe page for those who would like to help.
