University responds to sorority recruitment video controversy

TUSCALOOSA, Al. — The University of Alabama is responding to worldwide criticism over a sorority recruitment video.

The original video, which has since been pulled from YouTube, shows bikini-clad members of the Alpha Phi sorority, Beta Mu chapter. It had 500,000 views in its first week and soon went viral.

Other users have since posted the video:

A guest opinion piece, posted to al.com, claimed that the video was "worse for women than Donald Trump," citing images of sorority sisters wearing bikinis and blowing glitter that "sell beauty, sexuality and a specific look."

The sorority chapter has not responded to ABC News’ requests for comment.

In a statement, the University of Alabama said: "This video is not reflective of UA's expectations for student organizations to be responsible digital citizens. It is important for student organizations to remember what is posted on social media makes a difference, today and tomorrow, on how they are viewed and perceived."
