Uncle of woman reportedly lured to her death for baby speaks out

RINGGOLD, Ga. — The family of a woman that police said was lured and killed for her newborn is talking about how she met the woman accused of killing her.

Catherine Goins, 37, remained in the Catoosa County Jail with no bond as Natalia Roberts was laid to rest Friday.

Channel 2 Action News first reported on Wednesday how investigators said Goins lured Roberts to a home on Smoketree Circle in Ringgold and killed her for her 3-week-old baby.

After the funeral Friday, Channel 2's Tom Jones sat down with Roberts' uncle, Benny Roberts, who detailed how the two women met and talked about the moments that led up to Natalia Roberts' death.

"She called her mother and told her that something real good had just happened," Benny Roberts said.

Benny Roberts told Jones that Natalia had called her mother to tell her she just met the nicest woman; a woman that wanted to help her and her 3-week-old baby.

"She was excited about baby clothes that had been offered to her and how good God was and supplying that," Benny Roberts said.

Catoosa County investigators said it was Goins who offered Natalia Roberts the baby clothes. Except, Sherriff Gary Sisk said, Goins invited Natalia Roberts to a home because she wanted something else.

Deputies said Goins shot Natalia Roberts in the back of the head. They said Goins claimed Natalia Roberts was an intruder in the home, even though Natalia Roberts brought her 3-year-old along with her 3-week-old baby.

Investigators said they figured out that Goins faked a pregnancy and planned to pretend that the little girl was her own.

"It was like a made-for-TV movie," Benny Roberts said.

Natalia Roberts' family said the murder is beyond comprehension. They want justice, even if that includes the death penalty.

"We don't know if it will be applied in this case or not If it was, it did, then we'd be happy or would be satisfied with the court," Benny Roberts said.

Family members do not believe Natalia Roberts was shot in front of her 3-year-old.

Natalia Roberts' children are currently with family members.
