ATLANTA — Tenants of a local apartment complex say trash continues to pile up despite their continued inquiries about when it will be taken away.

Neighbors asked Channel 2 Action News for help after they say the dumpsters haven't been emptied in months. Now, they say they have serious health concerns.

Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri walked right into the manager's office to ask why the garbage is piling up.

In the pile of trash a couch can be seen and overflowing Dumpsters throughout the property. Neighbors told Viteri that despite the fact that they pay their rent on time; no one is doing anything about trash removal at the Sierra Ridge Apartments in northwest Atlanta.

“That’s contaminated waste you know what I’m saying? We're breathing that in,” Sarina Fields said.

Fields told Channel 2 Action News crews Wednesday that she worries about health risks at the apartments, especially because of her 3-year-old daughter.

“We have to walk right past the trash from my house. I have to smell the odor from the trash,” neighbor Wakeisha Favors said.

Favors and her four small kids live right in front of another set of dumpsters. Both women told Viteri they pay their rent each month but say no one has collected trash at the complex in at least a couple months.

“Where is the money going though? Why hasn't the trash been emptied?,” they asked.

Several neighbors including fields told Viteri another tenant even disposed of her dog in the dumpster when it died last month.

“She actually threw the dog in the trash and it was like maggots (were) literally crawling (in) a trail,” a tenant told Viteri.

No one at the management office would comment on the trash issue. Neighbors say when they asked management about the trash and were told it will be emptied soon.

“I’m not afraid to speak on where I stand, where I pay my money and where my child is living. I want something done about this situation,” a tenant said.
