ATLANTA — Thousands of runners and walkers are helping raise money and having fun on a runway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday morning.
Channel 2's Lauren Pozen was there for The Mayor's 5K on the 5th Runway hosted by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
The annual race draws more than 2,000 runners and walkers for a chance to walk or run the ground where hundreds of flights take off each day.
It also serves as a qualifier for the AJC Peachtree Road Race.
"It's early in the morning, so it's a bit challenging," runner Megan Harris said. "But the reward at the end and seeing everyone out here is all worth it."
The race helps benefit Bottoms' youth scholarship program and United Way's College Bound program. Both focus on helping students who might not be able to afford to go to college pay for school.
Volunteers with College Bound help answer questions for students and families about the federal forms for financial aid and also help fill them out.
