GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A teenager is in custody on charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault in the stabbing of a local taxi cab driver.
The driver was stabbed 20 times during the robbery.
Family members identified the cab driver as Miguel Hernandez. They said he is in critical condition, but improving.
"He's happy that he's alive, and he asked for all the family," the victim's sister, Marcela Santos, said.
According to Gwinnett County police, Luis Rojas, 16, is charged with armed robbery and assault in the stabbing.
Police said they responded to the 1000 block of Boggs Road in Gwinnett County at around 2:15 a.m. Monday. They found a Hispanic man on the road covered in blood. The man had been stabbed several times, they said.
"God was there with him, and we are so happy. We are so happy that he is still alive," Santos said.
Police said the taxi driver came to an apartment complex on Boggs Road to pick up a fare. Investigators said he was met by Rojas who tried to rob him, then began stabbing him. Police do not know if Rojas was the person who called for the cab or if he just intercepted it when the driver pulled into the complex.
Santos said a seat belt prevented her brother from getting away.
"He was strapped to the car, that's why he couldn't defend himself. He couldn't get out and when he got out it was too late," she said.
Once the driver was able to escape, Rojas stole the taxi and then crashed it about 5 miles away at Old Norcross Road and Ingram Road, according to police.
Rojas has been charged as an adult.
