Spalding County opens shelter, donation center for storm victims

SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — As emergency crews continue to assess the damage from tornadoes that hit Spalding County on Thursday and people who live there continue to cleanup, the county says it has opened a shelter for those who were displaced from their homes.

Spalding County Emergency Management said the American Red Cross has opened a shelter for those who need it at the First United Methodist Church at 1401 Maple Drive in Griffin.

The emergency agency also said that a donation center has also opened for anyone looking to drop off things to help those impacted by the storm.

The Griffin-Spalding County Donation Center will open be open from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, at 220 East Solomon Street, and will be accepting “non-perishable food items, gift cards, toiletries, and other personal items. No clothing will be accepted.”

“We greatly appreciate the public’s interest and concern for our community,” Spalding County Emergency Management Agency Director Glenn Polk said. “For now, staying home so first responders can continue recovery efforts is best. We will continue to provide updates as we receive them.”
