EAST POINT, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News is learning more about a dramatic hit-and-run crash incident involving a U-Haul.
The incident happened late Friday night along Church Street and Linwood Avenue in East Point.
A Channel 2 Action News reporter and photographer were there as emergency crews worked to overturn the flipped U-Haul after it took out power lines and hit several vehicles.
Channel 2's Michael Seiden obtained new home surveillance video of the incident and learned that the drive of that U-Haul is now in jail.
Eric Williams’ home surveillance camera caught the moment police say the driver slammed into a sedan before flipping the rental truck on its side.
“It sounded like something had crashed and just kept crashing and I was wondering if it was a plane crash because it happened so long,” William said. “It was a mess.”
Williams said as soon as he saw the wreckage he picked up the phone and called 911. But as it turns out, officers were already searching for the driver.
A spokeswoman for the East Point Police Department confirmed to Seiden that Darveon Hyde, 23, crashed the rental truck into another vehicle on Main Street and then drove it to Linwood Avenue where he took out traffic signals before colliding with another vehicle.
Channel 2's Matt Johnson was in the area and recorded video of the scene just minutes after the crash.
The driver is accused of running from the scene, but police eventually caught up with him, taking the young man into custody while they continue to investigate his girlfriend.
Witnesses told Seiden they saw at least two people running from the crashed U-Haul truck, but police said after the crash, the suspect's girlfriend showed up to the scene claiming that someone had stolen that truck.
No one was seriously injured in the incident.
